Baptism & Confirmation

BAPTISM (also known as CHRISTENING)

If you are interested in baptism at St John’s for yourself or your child, we will be delighted to discuss this with you. Please contact the Church Office.

In baptism, we thank God for his gift of life and publicly acknowledge his love. In the Anglican Church it is common to baptise young children; this is sometimes known as christening.

Baptism is a ‘sacrament’ (holy ritual to symbolise grace) in the Christian tradition that is traced back to Jesus himself being baptised in the river Jordan (Matthew 3: 1-17).

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation marks the point in the Christian journey where those who have been baptised as children make a firm commitment to Christian discipleship. During the service baptismal promises are renewed and the bishop will lay his or her hands on the head of each confirmation candidate, whilst the Church also asks God to give those being confirmed power, through the Holy Spirit, to live the life of discipleship.

Please contact the Church Office if you’d like to know more about a Confirmation service at St John’s.
